Parental sponsorship 2025: WAIT FOR AN INVITATION! But only those who filled out an application to sponsor their parents back in 2020 will be invited again…

Invitations will be sent out starting July 28th. In total, it is planned to accept 10,000 applicants (families) for consideration.

And now the most interesting question arises: HOW THIS YEAR DIFFERS FROM OTHER (immigration)  “LOTTERIES”?

It is important to keep in mind that 5 years have passed since the application was filled out (!!!), and...honestly, it’s a while ago!

In this regard, this year’s applicants will face many pitfalls…. And I would like to talk about that in this article.

Usually, it only takes a few months from the moment of application submission to the moment of invitation, and that is why the problems listed below have almost never arisen before.

1. You applied for sponsorship of your parents while you had permanent residence status, and now you are already a citizen. The same applies to PR cards and/or passports. Over these 5 years, almost everyone has extended their PR cards or extended their passports (respectively, changed them). When you apply, you indicate the numbers of these documents and when you receive an invitation, you must attach copies of the expired documents along with the new ones!

2. Over these 5 years, your parents divorced, although you submitted a request when they were still together. The general rule is that in this case only the main applicant (without the divorced spouse) can apply. But there are some details that are advisable to be discussed with a specialist. In some cases, the sponsorship option is still possible.

3. The composition of your family has probably changed: for example, you had children, you got married, or your parents had a child (this happens too). The current family composition is taken into account in the financial calculation, despite the fact that at the time of application (in 2020) they did not yet exist. In addition, the family includes even those close relatives who are not going to Canada (for example, your mother is going to Canada, but your father does not want to). From the point of view of financial obligations, the sponsored family still consists of 2 people.

4. An interesting twist happens with spouses who are separated, but have not yet filed for divorce (both from the side of the sponsored parents and from the side of the sponsor). If you still have not got a divorce, your ex-husband is still considered your husband from the point of view of parents’ sponsorship. That is, he can help you increase your income (to sponsor a parent). He is still considered a part of your family -if you need to know the total number of people to determine the minimum financial income for sponsorship.

But! There are some nuances that can impact the matter. So, if this is your case, please consult a specialist.

5. The sponsorship package includes a sponsor and his guarantor (the sponsor's spouse). A lot might’ve happened over three years and the guarantor can appear or disappear. If the sponsor's income is not enough, then the guarantor's income helps. But what if you recently divorced, that is, lost the guarantor. In this case, consult a specialist!

6. At the time of application submission, you lived in Quebec, and then moved to federal Canada or vice versa, so then how the financial obligations will be considered? According to the general rules, the province where the sponsor will live at the time of sending the package is taken into account, but there are some details in the amount of the required financial income.

7. If unfortunately one of the parents is passed away, you can still make a package for the second parent. BUT! This case can be taken care of by a specialist only and there are NO guarantees.
