✅Since 2005, Canada has welcomed more than 3.9 million new citizens, almost a third of whom came from India, the Philippines, or China. These countries have dominated immigration to Canada for nearly two decades. While new Canadians come from at least 196 different countries and territories, the top 10 countries account for almost half of all new citizens.
📌India has been in first place since 2021 and from 2007 to 2013, while 📌the Philippines held the top spot from 2014 to 2020. Together, India and the Philippines make up nearly a quarter of all new citizens since 2005. China held the top spot in 2005 and 2006.
✅Following India, the Philippines, and China, the top 10 countries by the number of new Canadians since 2005 include 📌Pakistan, Iran, the United States, the United Kingdom, Syria, South Korea, and Nigeria.
✅Although France ranked 11th with more than 69,000 new Canadians since 2005, the number of new citizens from France has significantly increased since 2022. In 2023 alone, France ranked ninth, surpassing Brazil and the United Kingdom.
Last year also saw a 19-year highest level, with nearly 379,900 new citizens, compared to a low of almost 106,400 in 2017.
📌The tiny European Kingdom of Liechtenstein provided the fewest new Canadians—five people—followed by 📌the Maldives in the Indian Ocean with 34 people.
📌Canada has welcomed slightly more new citizens from Ukraine (50,100) than from Russia (49,400), with the number of Ukrainians surpassing Russians since 2015 amid the war.
📌Since 2005, 325 people born in North Korea have gained citizenship, including two people this year. Canada has also welcomed over 72,700 new citizens from Syria and nearly 42,600 from Afghanistan after providing refuge to thousands of refugees from these war-torn countries.
