Truckers under attack: the US has stopped visas issuance, and Canada is looking in the same direction

‼But I warned you in my article from May 22, 2025 — “New rules for truckers in the US”. Back then I already mentioned that the tightening of requirements in America is not an accident, but a warning: the transportation sector has come under the radar of politicians and regulators. And here you go: the precedent when the US stopped issuing visas for foreign truck drivers was only a matter of time.

What happened in the US? After a high-profile accident in Florida, where an illegal truck driver caused the death of three people while trying to make a U-turn, the US administration of Donald Trump announced a pause in issuing work visas to foreign truckers.

Arguments: road safety, competition with local drivers, “too many foreigners on the highways”.

And what about Canada?

The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) immediately declared: "This should be a wake-up call for us." In other words, they demand that Ottawa review its own immigration programs in the transportation sector before the US starts putting pressure on Canada.

The CTA directly talks about problems with safety, licensing and the influx of immigrants into the industry, where "some companies do business without regard for ethics and standards." And this is a frightening rhetoric: when it comes to "cleaning up" immigration flows, temporary workers suffer first.

Why is this dangerous?

In the US, it all started with "just new language rules" and ended with a visa ban.

In Canada, similar things are happening: programs’ reviews, restrict access, "restore order."

This means that the fate of foreign drivers working on work permits may repeat the American scenario.

Let's draw conclusions: History repeats itself faster than we think. It all started in the US, now there is a pressure in Canada. For foreign truckers who work on work permits and are planning on applying for PR, this is an alarm signal: the industry is under close scrutiny, and any violation or high-profile case can result in tightening of the rules for everyone.
