A new federal law that allows international students to work up to 24 hours a week off-campus while studying is raising concerns among students and their advocates. This law is expected to come into effect this month. Immigration Minister Marc Miller stated that the new work hour limit will allow students to focus on their studies while still having the opportunity to work part-time.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government temporarily lifted the 20-hour work limit for international students to address labor shortages, but this measure ended on April 30.
During the summer, students were allowed to work 40 hours or more per week if they were on an academic break; however, for those continuing full-time studies, the limit remained at 20 hours per week.
Now, following consultations and regulations, the limit has been increased to 24 hours per week starting in September.
However, many students believe this change does not solve the problem of high living costs in Canada. It is important to understand that the number of allowed work hours for international students is constantly changing, and each study permit may have different conditions depending on the date it was issued or renewed.
Illegal work can significantly impact the ability to obtain permanent residency in the future, making it crucial to adhere to the established rules.
