From January 2025, Canadians wishing to visit the United Kingdom will require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Those planning to travel or transit through the country from January 8, 2025, will be able to apply for an ETA starting November 27 this year. This new requirement will become mandatory for all foreign nationals exempt from a visa.
According to the Government of Canada, once this rule comes into effect, Canadians must travel with the passport that was specified when applying for the ETA. The authorization will be valid for five years or until the passport expires, providing travelers with more flexibility in planning their trips.
It is worth noting that British citizens have been required to provide a similar electronic authorization when traveling to Canada since 2016. However, the ETA is only needed for those arriving by air, and it does not grant the right to work.
According to the UK government, the application for an ETA will cost £10, and this requirement applies to all travelers, including infants and children.
This innovation is an important step in enhancing border security and streamlining control, but for Canadians, it also means the need to plan trips in advance and stay updated on entry requirements.
