Canadian healthcare: a triple opportunity through a new approach in Express Entry

Canada has updated its medical stream in Express Entry, adding 10 new professions and strengthening support for the healthcare system.

By comparing this update with priority streams in Ontario (OINP) and British Columbia (BC PNP), we can identify three potential immigration pathways for healthcare professionals.

Federal list and provincial programs

The new federal list includes pharmacists, registered nurses, laboratory assistants, dental hygienists, and other professions.

In Ontario, OINP overlaps with 12 professions from Express Entry, including orderlies, nurse aides, and personal support workers.

In British Columbia, the Health Authority Stream also highlights 12 professions that match Express Entry. Working in Fraser Health almost guarantees a BC PNP nomination, which provides 600 additional points in Express Entry and a direct path to permanent residency (PR).

A significant addition – social workers

For the first time, social workers and professionals in social and community services have been included in the medical stream of Express Entry.

This is not just an addition but a recognition of their importance in the healthcare system. Social workers with CLB 7 language proficiency assist families in crisis, while community service workers support vulnerable populations, from the elderly to the homeless.

Ontario and British Columbia actively prioritize these professionals:

  • OINP invites social workers to Toronto
  • BC PNP seeks them in Vancouver

Their official recognition opens doors for those who contribute not only to physical health but also to social well-being.

Prospects for specialists

The update to the medical stream is an important step for Canada. It offers not only a new opportunity for doctors and nurses but also a path for those who help build social bridges.

Ontario attracts professionals with its developed infrastructure, British Columbia with its nature, and Express Entry with its flexibility and universality.

This update is particularly relevant for professionals from conflict zones, such as Ukraine, where war has left lasting scars. However, competition is increasing, and the social worker profession now requires CLB 7.

Conclusions and recommendations

For those planning to immigrate, it is advisable to consider all three pathways simultaneously. The most important steps include:

  • Improving English proficiency to CLB 7 or higher
  • Looking for employment in Ontario or British Columbia
  • Applying through all three streams – Express Entry, OINP, and BC PNP

Social workers are becoming key figures in Canada's healthcare system, and their time has finally come.
