Canada rejects visas like never before

Canada has always attracted students, workers, and tourists from around the world, but in 2024, the situation changed drastically.

The country denied 2.36 million temporary visa applications—this accounts for half of all submitted requests.

A year earlier, the rejection rate was only 35%, but now it has surged to 50%.

New strict rules have affected all categories: tourist visas, study permits, and work visas.

Why is this happening, and what can those who want to come to Canada do?

In 2024, Canada’s immigration service rejected a record number of applications:

  • Tourist visas were hit the hardest—54% rejection rate compared to 40% in 2023. In other words, every second application was denied.
  • Student visas faced a 52% rejection rate (compared to 38% in 2023).
  • Work visas were rejected less often, but the rate still increased to 22%.

The main reason for this strict policy is the government's plan to reduce the share of temporary residents from 6.5% to 5% by 2026. Canada is struggling with a lack of housing, medical services, and other resources, forcing authorities to limit immigration.

Why is Canada rejecting so many visa applications?

Several key factors have contributed to the increased rejection rates:

1️. Surge in temporary residents after the pandemic
In recent years, the influx of foreign nationals into Canada has grown, putting immense pressure on infrastructure.
Tourist visas are now rejected more often due to concerns that applicants will overstay their permitted duration.
Applicants must now provide strong proof of ties to their home country.

2️. Student visa scandals
Recent fraud cases have led to the introduction of a 360,000-study visa cap and stricter requirements for educational institutions.
Students now need to provide more financial proof, and document authenticity is being scrutinized more thoroughly.

3️. Tougher requirements for work visas
Work visa rejections have also increased, especially for low-skilled workers.
Employers now face greater challenges in proving that they cannot find local candidates for job openings.

What can you do to get a visa to Canada?

With Canada tightening its visa policies, proper document preparation is more crucial than ever:

  • Prove financial stability (show sufficient funds for the trip).
  • Demonstrate strong ties to your home country (job, property, family).
  • Present a clear travel plan with solid evidence that you will return home.

Many applicants do not succeed on their first attempt. In some cases, they have to apply a second or even third time before finally getting approval.

The process of obtaining a visa to Canada has become more difficult, but proper preparation and a well-organized application can improve your chances of success.
