Canada has recently updated its Express Entry system, introducing a new Priority Stream to attract essential workers.
One of the key additions is the Education Stream, designed to help teachers obtain permanent residency (PR) faster. The best part? It doesn’t matter what subject you teach. This move shows Canada’s commitment to strengthening its schools and daycare centers while providing opportunities for educators worldwide.
As of March 6, 2025, this is particularly exciting for those who teach English or French and dream of living in Canada.
Who is eligible?
The Education Stream is open to early childhood educators, assistants, and schoolteachers. The main requirement? At least six months of work experience in the last three years. This makes it significantly easier for many applicants.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve worked in Canada or abroad, and whether it was in a school or daycare—your experience still counts. Even better, you don’t need a teaching license to qualify!
This means any teacher can create a profile in Express Entry and receive an invitation to apply (ITA) for PR.
Why this is a game changer
As a teacher myself, I know how challenging it has been for educators to secure PR in Canada, as most teaching jobs require licensing. In the past, this was a major hurdle. But now, everything has changed. I’m thrilled that so many of my colleagues will have the chance to become permanent residents simply by proving their experience.
And once they receive PR, they can apply for a teaching license in Canada and resume their profession. This is a huge step forward for educators!
A special advantage for language teachers
This is an especially great opportunity for English and French teachers. Canada highly values proficiency in its official languages, which boosts your Express Entry score. Those who qualify under the Education Stream will be selected faster.
Canada is now investing in education, creating more opportunities for teachers. All you need is six months of experience in the past three years, and your work history counts—no matter where you gained it.
