A "Witch Hunt" on international students begins in Canada: IRCC requests documents on legal grounds

Indian students in Canada are facing a new wave of inspections from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), receiving requests to resubmit key documents such as study permits, visas, and educational records, including transcripts and attendance data.

These requests, which came as a surprise to many students, are part of IRCC's efforts to enhance control over compliance with the conditions under which visas and permits were issued. Under Canadian law, IRCC has the full right to request supporting documents from foreign nationals to verify that they are indeed studying at educational institutions or working within the scope of their permits. For instance, students are required to provide official transcripts of grades and attendance, while workers must submit pay stubs to confirm the legality of their employment.

This step has been taken in light of Canada's tightened immigration policies aimed at combating violations and abuses by international students. The new measures include stricter financial requirements for students and an exploration of the possibility of introducing quotas on international admissions.

While some students view these actions as excessively harsh, IRCC emphasizes that all requests are entirely legal and fall within its authority. The ministry states that the main purpose of these checks is to ensure that international students and workers adhere to the conditions under which their visas and permits were granted.

For students and workers, this serves as a reminder of the need to comply with regulations and keep documents that can confirm their legal status in the country.
