Canada has seen a sharp increase in the number of foreign travellers being turned away at the border, according to data from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). This comes amidst criticism of the government for allowing immigration numbers to rise, which has increased pressure on the housing market.
According to CBSA data, an average of 4,000 foreign travellers per month were denied entry during the first seven months of 2024. This represents a more than 20% increase compared to the same period in 2023. July 2024 saw the highest number of rejections in the last five years, with 285 visa holders turned away and 5,853 travellers offered the option to voluntarily withdraw their applications and leave the country.
The CBSA emphasizes that admissibility decisions are made on a case-by-case basis based on the documents provided. Having a visa or electronic travel authorization does not guarantee entry into Canada.
Immigration continues to be a hot topic for the government, especially regarding its impact on housing affordability. New changes to immigration policy are expected, potentially affecting the number of permanent residents allowed into the country.
For those planning to enter Canada, it is crucial to always be prepared and have all the necessary documents submitted when applying for a visa at the embassy.
Immigration is always a political issue, and politics can often be dirty, unfair, and illogical. Failure to meet entry requirements can result in refusal at the border and complications in obtaining future permits.
